What is neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback uses a recording of brain activity to provide feedback, often on a computer screen. In EEG neurofeedback, sensors placed on the scalp record electrical activity. The feedback is used during a training task. Recording a signal is different from delivering electrical stimulation to the brain.
The National Institute of Mental Health explains the distinction between neurofeedback and brain stimulation. Understanding how a method works does not, by itself, establish that it treats a particular condition.
Ask about the evidence for your specific concern
Evidence should be considered for the particular concern, the protocol used, and the outcomes measured. For ADHD, for example, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health describes mixed research findings, with differences depending on who rates the outcome. It also notes that neurofeedback's safety for ADHD has not been thoroughly tested.
This page does not promise improvements in attention, mood, sleep, memory, or recovery from a brain injury. A decision about care belongs in a conversation with a qualified clinician who understands your history and current treatment.
Questions to bring to a consultation
- What training method would you use, and why?
- What evidence supports that method for my particular concern?
- What are its limitations, possible adverse effects, and alternatives?
- How would we measure progress and decide whether to continue?
- How many visits are proposed, what would they cost, and what does each fee cover?
- How would this fit with the care I already receive?
Keep your current treating clinician involved. Do not stop or change prescribed medication on the basis of a website or a training result.
